DEVLIN / BIO
IN THE COOL OF THE EVENING
The Lord put down his guitar
and went for a stroll with Adam
in the cool of the evening.
They came to a mossy bank in
the bend of the river. And the
Lord said to Adam, “Adam, take
off your hat.” And Adam took off
his hat.
That dark man, Night, went to
his place in the sky.
To his place in the sky went
the dark man, Night, and turned
on his wheels. To his place in
the sky went the dark man, Night,
and from his body came a vapour
of light.
The Lord and Adam reclined
and ate meat.
Adam stretched out as if to
sleep, and a spray of jasmine
brushed his cheek.
The Lord removed a girdle
of vine-leaves from around his
waist.
And Adam slept in the bosom
of the Lord.
And they were as two children,
with their hands in each others’
hair.
