Second wind

A sign with apples swings
Above the gallery
The man at the end of the street
Has a heel that won’t touch the ground
“Like a communist” he wouldn’t go
For plaster of Paris
He smudges his nose
He loses his hat
He whistles out of tune
Under the brass canopy
A hollow head laughs
